The Chinle formation is also truncated at the top by a gentle erosional surface.
This surface is marked by a change from sof purple and grey t the stronger
red and brown coloration of the Moenave Formation above.
Collection rock and fossil specimens moenave fossil rock is authorised only through a collecting
permit available at the visitor center upon prior request. The permit is issued only to persons from recognized education institutions performing necessary and substantial research in the Park.
Private Collection are not allowed.
Approximately halfway up the irregular slopes below the Navajo is another prominent ledge. This is a tonge
of Navajo sandstone within the Kayenta beds. It represents a brief interval of dune intrustion that choked
the sterams with sand.
Zion Canyon's great meander is formed as the river winds aournf ANgels Landing and THe Organ.
Several ogher meanders are found farther upcanyon in the Narrows. The feature that characterizes their existence is the presence in each case of a major side canyon.
It appears that they may have developedin response to more rapid canyon widening on the side where the mouth of the tributary canyon is located. They
are not, then, true entrenched meanders from a previous moenave fossil rock higher erosional surface.
