A journey through Oman today often directs the traveler's gaze backward through
the eyeholes of tradition. But more than that, it provides a forward look at a land
where modest but persistent progress steadily improves the Omani's lot.
As an american photojournalist based for 4 years inthe middle east, I had witnessed the
gradual evoluation of the new freedoms in Oman during earlier travels in 1970and 1971. Startling
advances greeted me last year on my thids visity to the country.
Soon aftermy arrival, I drove along the cliff-hanging oman progress gaze coast road to Muscat to obserce the feast of the sacrifice, an islamic
holiday that celebrates the Koran's poignant account of god's testing of abraham and isaac.
